Waiting for Cheyenne

Only two weeks to go and we'll have our new little girl at home with us. Miss Cheyenne will arrive on September 17th and we'll be waiting at the Albuquerque airport to greet her and let her into our hearts. We go into this third adventure as puppy raisers with hopeful hearts and a determination to do the best we can to bring her up right and with lots of love from not only us, but everyone she meets. Still don't have her arrival time but hopefully it'll be early afternoon so we won't have to come home in the dark (well, we do have lights on the car, but would prefer to get her home before sunset). She'll be my office dog every day from Day One....just found out I can take her there right away and don't have to wait until she has all her shots. Luckily my office is my own and not a lot of people come in.....but when they find out we have a puppy, I might not get any work done.

 I've been checking the list and checking the supply basket to make sure we have everything we need for her. Food - Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Food - check! Kennel for the office - check! Dishes - check! Collar - check! Leash - check! oh, but we need two new collars since she will be wearing a breakaway collar in her kennel. Now that's a story in itself:

Cheyenne will be among ~100 CCI puppies who will be wearing Whistle Monitors....yup, high tech puppies. CCI and Whistle.com are doing a joint study.

CCI is hoping to answer some very interesting questions, such as ...

• What is the range of daily activity patterns of an 8-week-old puppy compared to a 6-month-old puppy?

• How restful is the sleep of a 12-month-old dog compared to a new puppy? 
• Do dogs that sleep more graduate more often, less often or the same as dogs that sleep less?  

This is a new project at Canine Companions looking at puppy activity levels, rest periods and long-term trends using a Whistle Activity Monitor (whistle.com).  Whistles are collar mounted, and made especially to track activity in dogs, so they’re waterproof and pretty rugged.  Whistle (San Francisco, CA) has generously donated approximately 100 Whistle units  for Canine Companions’ puppy raisers to use when receiving an 8-week-old puppy. They do not track a puppy's location, although Whistle does make a new monitor with built in GPS. The feedback is sent via an app loaded onto an iPhone.  i don't have all the details yet but look forward to seeing how this works.  Seems like a few years ago, CCI did a dog food study that required the puppy raisers to "examine" the dog's feces....this is a much better study to be in!!
